As a writer & speaker on art, Philip has contributed numerous essays for books & artists' catalogues. Much of his writing on Japanese art has been published by Frieze. Other art writing has been published by Oberon, Art & Asia Pacific, Artlines, Artlink, NAVA Quarterly, Sydney Biennale Critical Reader, Bijitsu Teco, Photofile, Post-Colonial Studies, Un, Like, and Art & Text. A collection of his writings on screen-based art Screenic has been published recently by Discipline, Melbourne.

He has also edited books for 2 major exhibitions he curated: Kaboom! Explosive Animation from America & Japan (MCA, Sydney) and Tezuka - the Marvel of Manga (NGV, Melbourne; AGNSW, Sydney; Asian Art Museum of San Francisco).
