Quarterly magazine of concert reviews and interviews from events at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre, Melbourne

New Music was a quarterly magazine instigated by Philip Brophy, in partnership with David Chesworth who at the time was co-ordinator of concerts and events at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre. The Centre was conceived and established by Ron Nagorcka with Warren Burt; Warren taught experimental music to both David and Philip at Latrobe University. Warren was Melbourne's central and most important figure in experimental/new/electronic music, instrumental in introducing many people to current ideas and concepts in experimental music.

Philip studied with Warren at the Latrobe University music department for one year (1977), but by 1978 Philip's interests gravitated more towards film theory in the newly created cinema studies department (with teachers like Sam Rhodie, Bill Routt and Leslie Stern). Philip's work with → ↑ → from 1977 to 1979 (the years he was studying at Latrobe) was energised by his involvement in both the music and cinema studies departments. Philip sought to fuse and cross-wire the theory, practice, history and culture of both fields, particularly in the idea of freely generating written texts and criticism for the proliferation of film and music being produced at the time. The New Music magazine was an experiment in passively coercing musicians, especially, into writing about their own and others' practice - to move beyond the standard 'programme note/explication' approach mostly used at the time. Most musicians enjoyed being involved in New Music's somewhat discomforting critical agenda; a few didn't.

2 compilation LPs were also released on Innocent Records. Some benefit concerts and screenings were also organized.
