Indeed, the best pieces resemble fully-formed song cycles. “Candle With Wings #1/#2” establish an ensemble identity with double bass overlaid with klezmer clarinet curlicues and gypsy nylon guitar runs. This is extended in “Tage ohne Stunden #1/#2” with electric guitar chords evoking Dwayne Eddy’s single-strums. Overall, the arrangements’ palette favours bell-like ringing. The result echoes John Zorn’s deconstructed Easy Listening in The Dreamers, but with less tiki martini and more complex timbres and tonality.
